Aims of the Media Studies Department
To enable students to develop an understanding of the relationship between media industries, institutions, technologies, products and audiences
To foster a critical understanding of a range of media texts and the ways in which they are read and understood by different audiences
To develop a critical awareness of media representations of individuals, groups and issues
To explore and represent their own ideas through practical production skills in one or more media – print, broadcasting, e-media
To provide equality of opportunity for all students to develop their media skills and to be aware of the role of the media and its industries in contemporary society
Description of the Media Studies curriculum
Students study radio, film and television, newspapers, magazines, advertising and electronic media.
GCSE - Key Stage 4
Pupils who opt for GCSE Media Studies complete AQA GCSE Media Studies and
CCEA GCSE Journalism in the Media and Communications Industry
A Level – Key Stage 5
Pupils complete WJEC AS and A2 Media Studies
Through studying Media, students can follow career paths in Journalism, Broadcasting – Television or Radio, Print – Newspaper Reporter, Television Producer, Radio Producer, Scriptwriter, Magazine Editor, Advertising and Sales, Public Relations, Events Management, Information Officer, Marketing, in addition to more traditional areas such as teaching and Law.
Extra Curricular Groups
Pupils have engaged in the Magazine and Media Club in school producing a School Magazine, and have established links with local Media organisations.
Students have achieved extremely highly in public examinations and pursued courses in higher education in Arts, Media and Journalism. Media Studies is an extremely popular option at A Level and GCSE with 90% of students consistently achieving Grades A*-C.
